In 2020 we were appointed as the road construction contractor on two schemes on the A38 Glynn Valley to stabilise the embankments.
Both sections of road required the works to run parallel to the River Fowey so we designed pollution mitigation measures to prevent run off from the site entering the watercourse.
The A38 forms part of the main spine road in Cornwall so Highways England we keen to minimise delays to the general public. The original scheme required daytime traffic signals and night time closures. However, through utilising our experience we developed a sequence and programme of works that enabled works to be constructed during the day without hindering the travelling public and minimising night time closures.
On the Drift Lane section of the works the design required the road to be closed for a number of weeks in order to install temporary sheet piles to enable the construction of the embankment. Through utilizing our experience, an alternative construction method was developed which not only saved the general public severe travel disruption but also saved the Client £300k.
The scheme involved the construction of:
- Reinforced earth embankments
- Bulk earthworks
- Reinforced concrete
- Gabion construction
- Drainage
- Road construction & kerbing
- Fencing
